I read a brilliant phrase in the memoir of TV writer Tracy McMillan called I love you and I’m leaving anyway. She said: “If I’m hysterical, it’s historical.” What she meant by that is when what would normally only be a mildly upsetting or neutral experience, unknowingly keys into similar past events that have not been fully processed and you find yourself going absolutely nuts over it – you’re in floods of tears, or incredibly anxious or you shut down completely – and no-one, perhaps least of all you, can understand why this has produced such intensity of emotion. This is our first clue that we have undealt events and...

Read MoreRecently I’ve been receiving the message again and again in different guises about how important self-love is. I’ve found it to be such a hackneyed phrase that it’s become easy to ignore over the years. Louise Hay who wrote ‘You can Heal Your Life’ was probably the first to push the message to the forefront, and even in the EFT set up we make the statement that ‘I love and accept myself.’ So I knew it was important, but a part of me never really took it to heart, accepted what it meant or how it feels to truly live that phrase. However certain things I’ve read and watched recently have really put together why it is so...
Read MoreI spent some of this week providing Reiki sessions to children and parents on wards at the Royal Alexandra hospital. Hospitals are by default, stressful environments, but the wisdom of the doctors who have seen the benefits of Reiki and given time to volunteer practitioners to allow the service on the wards is to be applauded. Reiki is soothing, comforting and provides connection and reassurance. It is a healing practice, and though this is not emphasised in the hospital setting, its relaxation properties are wonderful to observe. Babies’ hearts rates slow, children drift off to sleep, parents allow themselves a moment to unwind and and generally Reiki allows an...
Read MoreI recently began reading ‘Ask and it is Given’ by Esther and Jerry Hicks which is one of the big Law of Attraction books, that along with the film ‘ The Secret’, garnered a lot of attention in terms of creating, or manifesting our own reality through the power of our thoughts, or more importantly, the feeling vibrations we send out, which then attract similar vibrations to us. Not all of the book was for me, but there were some particular points that I really liked. EFT is based on the clearing of energy blocks, or disruptions, to regain a smooth flow of energy around our bodies, which leaves us healthy emotionally and physically and a very salient point that...
Read MoreI recently watched a talk about depression and the person giving it concluded that the opposite of depression was not happiness, but vitality. He also spoke about how his depression followed a series of loses, as depression so often does, and about how the innate risk in loving or gaining anything, is to later lose it. And this got me thinking about how, so often once our material comfort begins to improve and our relationships flourish, if we’re not careful, we can begin to depend on these external events for our happiness, to want to cling onto them and control them in order to make sure we do not lose them. This isn’t a personal fault, it’s a...
